OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine (WGME) ā A Maine man armed with a gun was shot and killed by police in a store parking lot, according to authorities.
Maine State Police said 38-year-old Christopher Harriman, of Limerick, died Tuesday in Old Orchard Beach.
The incident began around 6:40 p.m. after troopers responded to a report that Harriman was in a black Escalade, armed with an AR-style rifle, and making suicidal threats and threats to others at the Kennebunk rest area on the Maine Turnpike.
When police arrived, Harriman led them on a chase before allegedly pointing a gun out the window toward officers. He was later found in Landry's Shop Nā Save parking lot in Old Orchard Beach.
State police said officers tried to negotiate with Harriman and convince him to surrender as he stood outside his SUV.
But, said police, Harriman reached in his SUV, grabbed his rifle, and loaded a round. He was then shot and killed by Trooper Ryan Phillips.
The trooper has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard in officer-involved shootings.
The Office of the Attorney General is investigating the use of deadly force.
Harriman had a criminal record dating back to 2004. Most recently, in December 2023, Harriman was charged with violating conditions of release.
